3.0 out of five stars Worked great till discovered bug; then began energy sapping buyer service oddysey, December 17, 2010
By JJ See all my reviews This review is from: HP Officejet 6500A Plus e All in One (CN557A#B1H) (Electronics) roughly one month ago, I bought the 6500A plus. Installation was straightforward, and it appeared to operate well. One flaw quickly became obvious, however: whenever the printer sat idle for more some minutes, it could subsequently not print. Scouring the available troubleshooting guides in its software, I came across a part of advice that suggested I turn the printer off, then on again. That worked, except printing papers now obliged 1) pressing the power button to deactivate sleep mode 2) pressing it once more to turn it off 3) pressing it again to turn the printer on. Quickly, this procedure became annoying and I looked up HP’s buyer service # online. Began a two hour conversation with one of their technical support reps.

The buyer service employee I spoke to sounded foreign (later learned he was in the Phillippines) but had a pretty good command of English. But, he misstated a couple of things, and only as I was about to hang up and decided to summarize his earlier statements, did I learn what really goed on. My printer has a recognized bug, that affects seemingly a minority of all of these models; namely, after being turned on for about five minutes, the printer quickly enters sleep mode and doesn’t come out of it when you go to print. The agent looked for a work around in the, and I am not making this up, “underwear” settings, and started to see how to fix “energy saving mode” (what he called it instead of “sleep mode”). He sounded like he was clueless. Then we went through some number of trials where he inquired me to press button after button on the keypad, which lasted about 15 minutes. In between information, he put me on hold to confer with colleagues and search online forums. The keypad buttons he told me to press did totally nothing..the printer didn’t react whatsoever. I may have well as been tapping on the desk.

I asked if I could get a substitute, to which he replied no, as this defect didn’t warrant one. But he said he could help me get an upgrade, but could not elaborate. I then asked to speak to a manager. A period of some minutes of silence ensued where he didn’t react, and I thought he may disconnected. , he came on the line and propose he could offer me a substitute, but not an upgrade. One hour afterward, after being given incorrect service tag #’s, and more frustration, I finished the conversation and am expecting a substitute in about a week.

Oh, and before hanging up he told me his name was Peggy. If only.

12/23/10 Update: I received the new printer today, installed it, and it appears to work properly. Once left idle for some number of minutes, the printer enters sleep mode, and subsequently jumps to life when I go to print (as it should).

At this point I’d like to make a couple more observations: The printer doesn’t come with a paper copy of a user guide. The user guide is a software variant, and the search choice is inferior. By comparison to Google, it seems like it was intended by third graders. After many effort, though, I discovered that energy saving mode totally different from sleep mode. The complete objective of “Peggy’s” help was to deactivate or delay energy saving mode. That could not have influenced sleep mode (nor my printers’ problems) in the slightest! HP has many serious buyer service issues if their employees are so ill informed they do not understand the basic features of their own printers.

FYI: Energy saving mode will turn off the processor and firmware when the printer is turned off, to cut down on electricity handling. Sleep mode, on the other hand, deactivates the lcd and enables the printer to use less electricity while on. Energy saving mode may be turned off through one of the lcd sub menus, while sleep mode can not be.

4.0 out of five stars life is a little easier GREAT printer and scanner!, November 2, 2010
By Vincent Sellers “ramair350″ (Austin, TX United States) See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME) This review is from: HP Officejet 6500A Plus e All in One (CN557A#B1H) (Electronics)
Buyer review from the Vine™ Program () I newly have had the pleasure of installing and using this new printer from HP.

Out of the box, this printer is a bit bigger than I projected. It has trays, the double sided print attachment, and feeders that make the size physically a bit bigger than my last home desktop printer.

Setup out of the box was ok but has room for improvement, at least depending on my experience. The reason this product gets four stars instead of five is that in spite of being wireless, I simply couldn’t get the unit to connect to my machine without using the USB cable. I setup the printer as indicated by the information, , then was able to connect to my home network’s router. I entered my password, and presto, the printer said it has been connected. But, after many tries at installing the included software, rebooting both the printer and my home machine, I just could not get it to connect wirelessly. FYI, my home machine runs Vista 64 bit.

I then decided to attempt to setup my laptop, which runs Windows XP. Being able to easily print anyplace in the house from my laptop was one of the key reasons I looked forward to using this printer. I went through alike setup steps, and firstly had the same problem trying to connect. The HP software prompted me to physically enter the printer’s assigned IP address, but that could not work. After rebooting my laptop, the printer automatically connected, though I noticed that the printer’s IP address (as shown on my laptop) was different that the one shown on the printer display. So was I able to connect? Yes. Was it easy? Not really.

But on to the good stuff . The color touch screen works great on this unit, and is a considerably improved interface over anything I have ever used on a home machine.

The print quality is great, scans are easy and look sharp, and the stand alone copy feature has already been a winner for me. I have generally used a separate scanner, captured the image, messed with it, , then had to print to my printer to make a “copy”. Now I can make a copy without visiting my computer!

I have not used the fax feature, but it’s prepared to go and looks easy to use.

In summary, in spite of some setup problems (and who knows there are lots of network complexnesses these days firewalls, etc), once I had everything up and running, this unit performed admirably. Recommended!

5.0 out of five stars Really Nice Printer, November 21, 2010
By R. Ludwig (Novato, CA USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: HP Officejet 6500A Plus e All in One (CN557A#B1H) (Electronics) I bought this printer to replace my workhorse HP 6110 that gave it up. Once you get past the extreme packaging, you have a nice printer. It is shiny black (everyone is referring to it as the Darth Vader look) so it’ll show all the dust and finger prints and the residual sticky from the packaging will attract dust for quite many times. OK, bitching done. The printer set up is really easy. You follow the cartoon easy set up guide and in some minutes the printer is performing its self checks and shortly thereafter it is running. I do not use the fax so I do not know how easy that set up really is but HP devotes nearly the complete guide to setting up the fax choice. The software setup is easy and was problem free on my laptop. My desktop had some compatibility issues with Norton AV but that has been resolved. The software could not load on another laptop running Vista. The wireless print capability is great. The printer has no physical connection in my network so both of my machines are connected via the wireless router (desktop mnachine isn’t wireless capable). The printer also has a great feature called ePrint that gives the printer an EMail address (via HP) so that the body of any EMail sent to that address will be printed on the printer (recognizes MS Office docs, PDF, JPG, etc., also as plain text). That means that you may print to the printer from any place you have an internet connection. Set up for this was simple though it did require that I reset the printer at one point before it could start printing; been working good since then. Black print quality is pretty good. Color for text, etc. Is quite good. Haven’t tried printing photos. I haven’t had the printer long enough to see how long the ink lasts. But, you do get individual cartridges for each color and black. Scan capability looks pretty nice also. You register machines via the set up on the printer. Once registered you may be able to scan to the target machine. Warning though: you have to have the HP software running on the machine so the connection will work. That means another task sucking up CPU. The scanner has both flat glass and a sheet feeder. The sheet feeder works quite well and is fast. Wish it had two sided sheet feed but that is available in the next model up.All in all, I like this printer and the price was quite good. We will see how well I like it in 3 4 years.
