    The Holy Grail of AIOs?,
    October 4, 2009

By&nbsp, charlesn New York, NY See all my reviews

    &nbsp,&nbsp,

just disclosure: I have had this printer up and running for less than 48 hours. But the early results have been so very good, I felt a review was in order. If you, like me, have been on an endless search for an AIO that really worked as advertised and could hold own with minimal agreement and more task particular printers, then I believe your search ended with the 990.

Setup: A+. I have two Macs, one a PowerMac G5 running 10.5, the other a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, both on my Airport Extreme simultaneous dual band network, and setup was about as close to plug and play as you could get. Just make sure that if you are running 10.6, you download all the new drivers from Canon’s web site. The software CD filled with the printer isn’t updated for Snow Leopard.

Wireless Performance: As noted above, connecting to my home network was a snap. I have had no dropped connections over two days. Now, I have never had a problem printing wirelessly in the past, but scanning wirelessly and reliably? Forget it. At least, till the 990, which worked flawlessly on both machines from the 1st scan. You’d swear that Apple, and not Canon, had intended this hardware/software solution. Pop in a document, click scan, decide which computer you want to send it to and you are done.

Printing Quality: A. Superb quality on both black text and color graphics, and all reasonably fast.

Photo Quality: have not gotten into this still, but professional reviews posted far point to that the photo printing performance is excellent.

Scanning/Copying Quality: A. Scans and copies are very good. Have not tried negs or slides as still.

Ease of Use: A. If Apple intended own printer, this is how it could work. An surprisingly intuitive interface.

I’ll post an update after I have put it through its paces a while longer, but it is a certain five stars out of the box. Thanks for taking the time to read this review I hope you found the information useful in helping you make a purchasing decision!

    Update as of 10/16/09:

The Bad News: inside two weeks of posting my review, this printer dropped in price by $100! Oh well. That’ll teach me to be 1st in line to purchase a new model! :

The Good News: I rated it five stars at $299 and I still think it is every bit as good as noted in my review. At $199, it is now a steal of a deal also.

    UPDATE AS OF 12/7/09

The professional reviews are now coming in for the MP990, and they are raving: Computer buyer gave it a nine out of 10, and . Gave it Editor’s Choice, stating that they had a hard time coming up with any “cons” for their conclusion. I remain totally pleased after two months of use.

    Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?

Today I received my new Canon PIXMA MP990 Inkjet Photo All In One Printer from Amazon. There’s only one word to describe this printer: Wow!

After unpacking the printer, installing the drivers and software from the included CD ROM, I updated the drivers and software for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard from Canon’s web site. The Wi Fi setup took about one minute and it was working flawlessly all day.

Then I scanned some papers and printed them out the quality is just amazing.

There are six ink cartridges in total in their installed order:

    Magenta 221

    Black 221

    Grey 221

    Pigment Black 220

    Cyan 221

    Yellow 221

There is a pigment based black ink cartridge 220 that’s only used for printing text. The rest of the dye based ink cartridges 221 were used for printing photos. The text output is as clear or better than a laser printer, and the photo output is totally stunning IMHO.

If you need a new printer for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard get the new Canon PIXMA MP990 printer. You will not be disappointed.

    Verified PurchaseWhat’s this?

This is my 1st review of the Canon PIXMA MP990. On 1st look you kind of get the feeling your looking at a small tank and it feels like it when you lift it up. The setup was easy thought at 1st it was a little daunting to see all those ink cartridges and a print head to put in. The print head went right in and was easy, just slid in and secure with a lever. It took some minuets to be sure each ink cartridge was in the correct slot and seated properly so the light on the end came on. The one place things could go wrong here is a part of plastic that turn that covers the ink port on the cartridge that may break in the wrong way if you do not follow directions. The one Doh!! moment I had was when I turned it on it kept showing a door was open and I just could not see it at 1st. There is a small door inside the print just under the printer platen that must pulled down when I taked all the tape used to secure the printer. So then it was all set up and I turned it on. It whirred away for awhile priming the print head and going through many diagnostics till it was prepared. It had many special paper just for the setup that nearly felt like thin cardboard that it used for the test print, they have many special information for it in the documentation.

I’ve got mine set up so my XP machine is connected with a USB connection and I have a WiFi connection to my Vista Laptop down stairs. I do not have my router password protected shame on me!!! so it was not most of a test setting it up to connect the laptop to it. You do have many special software you have to load on the remote machines so it can see the printer and also scan to it but that was not any issue setting up.

So far I have not really done much printing on this machine put I noticed that only after printing a manual of around 60 pages, one eight by eleven B/W photo, and a couple of smaller four by 5’s that the colored ink is already down by a quarter so I am guessing it uses up ink pretty fast, time will tell. The black ink so far is showing no handling. So I can not say much about handling but the color of the photos is good using both the Canon paper and many cheaper photo paper I have.

For the scanner so far I’m impressed. Looking at the build quality through the glass you may be able to see that the scan head runs on two steel rods while most other multi printers I have taken separately just run on a plastic track built into the floor of the scanner. I do greatly recommend that you use the Mp Navigator EX that comes with the software. I am not sure if it was just the old Paint Shop Pro eight software I used or you may be able to only see the higher scan settings in the EX software but I could only see 1200dpi in the Paint Shop software and I can see 4800dpi using the EX software. For color photos it seems like 600dpi is as high as I can get while with slides and negatives you may be able to go up to the 4800dpi. So I guess if you want to do 1200dpi for photos you could have to use a separate software. It does though recognize the edges of the photos and will scan them individually. Using the special setup for the slides was a little puzzling with a chart as it took me awhile to realize I just had to take the film holder out and lay the rest of the holder back on the platen agreeing up the hole with the pin on the side of the platen. There’s a separate lighted platen under the big while backing that comes off that lights up when you tell it you’re using negatives or slides. I has been amazed at the scan at 1200dpi how well one of the bigger 35 millimeter slides came out. I printer it and it looked like a regular photo. I took a magnifying glass to it and could hardly see any pixelation.

Well that is about all I can think of now, I will attempt and keep this updated as I use things or any issues come up.

Fast speed up to 31 ppm and very easy to use. The setup function is all done via software you do not have to touch the 6500’s keypad controls. It links straight to your System Preferences control panel making the wireless and fax settings easy. It uses four separate color inks, so you may be able to control your print costs when only a single color needs to be replaced.

Main disadvantage is HP’s choice to only include a 2 line text display. For a printer in this price range, HP should included a 2.5″ color LCD screen. If you are looking for a multifunction machine that does it all, seriously think about the HP 6500 Wireless.

I looked and researched wireless printers and goed crazy. This one had all postive reviews so I decided to order it. I wanted an all in one printer/scanner/copy/ fax and wireless. At 149.00 dollars sale price I decided to go for it.

It came in a big box and I thought what did I order and when I took it out of the box it was bigger than my other all in one, but the double sided printing attachment adds many bulk I haven’t tried this feature. It’s noisier than my HP 4280 all in one, but that isn’t a big deal.

Set up was pretty easy, I just followed the instruction set up page. The software took a long time to install. I’m familiar with printer set ups and installing software so no problem there just time consuming. It came with everything I needed as well as the USB cord usually not included. The fax was easy to set up and send I haven’t received a fax yetIt speed dial too. The wireless works perfectly from my laptop. I am familiar with HP software so the program is easy to use for scanning and it is easy to do copies too.

I am unfamiliar with printheads that you must install yourself and I don’t know if they must be replaced periodically or not. The ink comes with a pop off top that was kind of scary but you just pop it off. Cartridges are easy to install. It looks to have to go through many to get going as well as sound.

It took me over an hour but I was not in a big hurry.

The only problem I encountered is with my new HP pavilion laptop 64bit running Vista. My desk top is a dell running XP, and I did not have any software problems. The software installed on my laptop with no problems except it gives an error message when I shut down my laptop. My HP 4120 did the same thing, HP hasn’t been able to give me a fix. It is a 64 bit problem.

I’m pretty impressed with all the features and I printed out many four by six photos and had no problem using photo paper or four by six paper. The paper tray holds tons of paper which is nice when using wireless, in case I forget to check before printing.

I only gave it four stars due to Vista 64 bit software glitch.

I am an intermediate to advanced computer user.

Excellent print quality, but clunky sounding and big drivers,

By&nbsp,Dave Connecticut, USA See all my reviews

Yes, the print quality is beautiful, but I am not as overjoyed as the last reviewers.

The printer driver alone is 245 MB. That is nearly as big as my complete MS Office suite! WHY??? With not many of its optional programs included an extra 100 MB or so, it took a good 20 minutes to copy and install the software from the disk onto my desktop computer and complete the initial setup.

I had projected that once the machine has been installed on my wireless network using my desktop, that our laptops on the network could simply detect it and add it with the Windows Add Printer function, if all they wanted was print capability maybe by grabbing a small driver off the internet or from the machine itself. But oh, no. This thing must be installed from the disk for each machine, and took 20 minutes each to install on our XP laptops, and nearly 30 minutes on our VISTA machine. The useless completion bar sat at 94 for most of that time.

As I said in the header, the machine itself is noisy. Some seconds after each print job completes, it starts back up and clunks and whirs for 15 20 seconds, seemingly chewing its way through many kind of self adjustment/maintenance. I fear that this isn’t the sound of lasting durability. I am happy I bought the two year warranty.
